Another light roast hits the offering list. Our first coffee sourced from the Sierra Negra region in Puebla, Mexico. While traveling through Mexico last year with our importing partners at Crop to Cup and their on-the-ground partners Denso, we met the Cayetano family. Nestled near the town of Huitzmaloc, this family has been cultivating coffee for three generations.
Fabian (pictured at the top) is the grandson of Fortino, who held steadfast during a coffee pricing crisis in the 1990s and continued to cultivate on the family’s farms. Fabian’s dad Ricardo (pictured to the right) continued this tradition, selling coffee in exchange for groceries which could be sold internally within their community.
Fabian’s goal was to gain access to the specialty market, and on the way to achieving that goal he studied agronomy to better understand how to improve the quality of his family’s coffee. The Cayetanos validated this transition by having some of the best coffee at the Pride of Puebla competition in 2020.
Crop to Cup accessed these producers through their new Good Coffee Program. Being present and on the ground in Mexico for the onset of this program in 2023 allowed us a better understanding of the logistical challenges many producers in Mexico face. However, it also granted us faster access to new relationships and producers like the Cayetanos.
We’re thrilled to share their story and showcase what coffee can be from Puebla. This particular lot is cultivated at 1450 meters, is fully washed and dried on raised beds. 100% Typica variety. We taste notes of cabernet, blackberry, chocolate, and a creamy body.
